As a project management professional, maintaining your PMI (Project Management Institute) certification is essential to demonstrate your ongoing commitment to professional development and stay up to date with the latest industry standards. One of the key requirements for maintaining your PMI certification is earning Professional Development Units (PDUs). PDUs are a measure of the professional development activities you undertake to enhance your project management knowledge and skills.

In this article, we will explore the essential facts about PMI PDUs and provide you with easy-to-implement strategies to maintain your PMI certification. Whether you’re a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), or hold any other PMI certification, understanding PDUs and meeting the maintenance requirements will ensure the longevity and value of your certification.

Understanding PMI PDUs

Professional Development Units (PDUs) are a measurement system used by PMI to quantify and recognize the professional development activities of certified professionals. PDUs are a way for project management practitioners to earn credit for their ongoing learning and professional growth. By earning and reporting PDUs, professionals can maintain their PMI certifications and demonstrate their commitment to continuous improvement in project management.

Why are PDUs Important?

Earning and maintaining PDUs is crucial for several reasons:

  • Continued Professional Development: PDUs encourage professionals to engage in continuous learning and development, keeping their skills and knowledge up to date.
  • Maintaining PMI Certification: PDUs are a requirement for maintaining PMI certifications, ensuring that certified professionals are actively involved in their professional growth.
  • Enhancing Professional Competence: PDUs provide opportunities for professionals to expand their project management competence, learn new techniques, and stay abreast of industry trends.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Many PDU activities offer networking and collaboration opportunities, allowing professionals to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and build valuable professional relationships.
  • Increasing Career Opportunities: Maintaining PMI certifications through PDUs can enhance career prospects by demonstrating ongoing professional development and dedication to the project management field.

PDUs Required For Each Certification

Every certification by the Project Management Institute has a different variety of requirements which depending on how used to the process you are, can be quite simple. The pricing between them can also change depending on whether you are a PMI member or not. We will touch on that note a bit more later. For now, here are the specifics for each of them:

1. PMI Certification: PMP (Project Management Professional), PgMP (Program Management Professional), PfMP (Portfolio Management Professional), PMI-PBA (PMI Professional in Business Analysis)

  • Professional Development Units Required (Total): 60
  • Education PDUs (Min): 35Giving Back PDUs (Max): 25
  • Renewal Cost (USD): 60 for Members, 150 for Non-Members

2. PMI Certification: CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)

  • Professional Development Units Required (Total): 15
  • Education PDUs (Min): 9
  • Giving Back PDUs (Max): 6
  • Renewal Cost (USD): 60 for Members, 150 for Non-Members

3. PMI Certification: PMI-ACP (PMI Agile Certified Practitioner), PMI-RMP (PMI Risk Management Professional), PMI-SP (PMI Scheduling Professional)

  • Professional Development Units Required (Total): 30
  • Education PDUs (Min): 18
  • Giving Back PDUs (Max): 12
  • Renewal Cost (USD): 60 for Members, 150 for Non-Members

As you’ve seen, PMI PDU requirements can vary depending on the certification you hold. The Education and the Giving Back categories are where you may earn your PDUs. The PMI PDU qualifications for every PMI certification have been detailed below, along with the activities that can be done to get your PDUs in these categories.

Professional Development Units Requirements For Each Certification

The number of PMI PDUs required for each certification varies. Here are the PMI PDU requirements for every PMI certification:

PMP (Project Management Professional), PfMP (Portfolio Management Professional), PgMP (Program Management Professional) & PMI-PBA (PMI Professional in Business Analysis)

You must obtain 60 PMI PDUs during a 3 year period if you possess any of these certifications. All The 60 PDUs can be obtained in the categories of Education and Giving Back. The Education category is essential, whereas the Giving Back category is entirely optional. In the following section, we will explain each PMI PDU category in detail, along with the actions you can do in each of them.

If you have a PMP, PfMP, PgMP, or a PMI-PBA certification, you must earn your PDUs this way:

  •  35 Min PDUs for the Education category: 8 Min PDUs needed in all its classifications: Technical, Strategic, Leadership, and Business Management.
  • 25 Max PDUs for the Giving Back category: 8 Max PDUs in the Working as a professional classification. Min of 17 PDUs in the Volunteering and Creating Knowledge classifications.

CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)

If you have a CAPM certification, you have to earn a minimum of 15 PDUs during a 3 year period. These PDUs can be acquired like this:

  • 9 Min PDUs for the Education category: 2 Min PDUs needed in all its classifications– Technical, Strategic, Leadership, and Business Management.
  • 6 Max PDUs for the Giving Back category: 2 Max PDUs in the Working as a Professional classification and a min of 4 PDUs in the Volunteering and Creating Knowledge classification.

PMI-ACP (PMI Agile Certified Practitioner), PMI-RMP (PMI Risk Management Professional) & PMI-SP (PMI Scheduling Professional)

If you currently have either of these certifications, you must acquire 30 PDUs over a period of 3 years. The PMI PDUs for it can be earned in the following ways:

  • 18 Min PDUs for the Education category: A min of 4 PDUs is required in all its classifications – Technical, Leadership, Strategic & Business Management.
  • 12 Max PDUs for the Giving Back category: A min of 8 PDUs in the Volunteering and Creating Knowledge classification, and a max of 4 PDUs in the Working as a Professional classification.

Education and Giving Back: The Two PMI PDU Categories

For the Giving Back & Education categories, there is a set amount of PMI PDUs you need to earn. You can participate in a different variety of activities to acquire them. These activities may include, but are not limited to:

1. Earning PDUs

There are various ways to earn PDUs, including:

  • Education and Training: Participate in project management courses, workshops, webinars, conferences, or other educational activities.
  • Self-Directed Learning: Engage in self-study, such as reading project management books, articles, or industry publications.
  • Giving Back to the Profession: Contribute to the project management community through activities such as volunteering, mentoring, or presenting at conferences.
  • Work Experience: Apply your project management skills and knowledge in real-world projects and document your experiences.

2. Ways To Earn PMI PDUs From The Education Category

The ways you can acquire your PMI PDUs through the Education Category are as follow:

Taking Online Trainings Or Courses

The Project Management Institute recommends everyone to use the website projectmanagement.com, but you can also search for your own training courses, online live courses, papers, or guidelines on other similar websites. The materials you will be using to further your education could include a wide range of project management subjects. Conflict resolution, project planning, project reporting, leadership, stakeholder management, and business analysis are just a few examples.

Join Your Local Project Management-Related Events

Many companies and organizations may hold regular meetings and events in your region. These types of activities can provide you with anything from two to fifty PDUs, while the meetings normally provide from one to three PDUs.

Find Relevant Reading Material

If you are a person that is always looking to learn new things, this one is perfect for you. Just by looking for a book or publication that is relevant to project management at the Project Management Institution shop or any other virtual or local bookstores and reading it, you will be able to earn PDUs.

Organize A Lunch Or Dinner Learning Session

You may host a casual and impromptu learning session where you can invite your coworkers, subordinates, superiors, and even your friends for lunch and discuss various project management or business planning matters.

What Is The PMI Talent Triangle?

According to the Project Management Institution, your education must fit into one or more of the categories established inside of the PMI Talent Triangle:

1.- Technical Project Management

This category pertains to the skills, attitude, and knowledge you acquire in the business analysis industry, as well as the management of projects, portfolios, or programs.  Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, crisis management, negotiating skills, emotional maturity, listening skills, leadership, and other topics can all be learned in this area.

2.-  Leadership

Traits like negotiation abilities, conflict resolution skills, self-motivation, originality, emotional maturity, and team-building skills are all talents that someone can employ in order to lead their team and effectively manage all of their projects.

3.-  Strategic and Business Management

This refers to the knowledge and skills needed to improve the performance of your project or company in order to achieve superior business results. This covers analytical reasoning, financial statement analysis, long-term planning, benchmarking, market research, information and technology management, project management, and business analysis, among other abilities.

Some Things You Should Keep In Mind

It doesn’t matter if you pay for your certification renewal cost before it reaches the expiration date, the new cycle for your PMI certification will begin from the present expiry date. For instance, suppose your certification expires on October 1, 2024, and you renew it on December 1, 2022. The next time you must update your certification is still going to be 3 years from the original renewal date, so October 1, 2027.

There is a possibility to transfer around 20 surplus PDUs to the following 3-year cycle in the case of having earned way more than the requisite PDUs during your current 3-year cycle. Note that in the case that you don’t acquire the required amount of PDUs during your present 3-year cycle, your certification will be invalidated and will expire! The PMP certificate you worked so hard to get will be revoked if this happens.

The Project Management Institute can grant you a 1-year grace period to complete your missing PMI PDU and pay the renewal cost. However, your certification’s validity will remain suspended throughout this time limit. The Project Management Institute does not allow you to use the title of “Project Management Professional” throughout this suspension time.

After that, you have 1 year to complete the required PDUs. Your certification will be reinstated if you acquire the needed PDUs; however, if you do not earn the necessary PDUs, your certification will be terminated, and you’ll have to reapply to take the Project Management Professional certification test again.

Which PMI PDU Courses Can I Take?

There is a great variety of PMI PDU courses and training available on the internet and in your location that you could attend to acquire the needed PDUs. One benefit of attending a PMI PDU class is that you might learn new things while earning PDUs. If you look online, you will find plenty of high-quality courses. You may also contact your local Project Management Institute branch or PMI R.E.Ps to see what courses they have available. You can pick a project management course that appeals to you but is also economically possible.

As a result, you have the choice of selecting a program that meets your requirements, interests, and your budget. You can also attend webinars, events, and even conferences in addition to taking PMI PDU courses. These might be held over the internet or in-person in your area. You can look for information about them on social media, on your neighborhood’s Facebook pages, ask coworkers and friends, or wait for bulletins and commercials on television.

You may also gain PDUs by mentoring someone, reading a book, hosting your own lecture, or participating in online Wikipedia pages or conversations regarding project management and business analysis. As you can see, you have a plethora of possibilities for obtaining the necessary PMI PDUs. Though it is worth noting that attending events, seminars, or workshops is a difficult way to get PDUs, as you’ll wind up attending a lot of them only to get from 2 to 5 PDUs each. So, what are your alternatives? Attending PMI PDU classes is the best choice.

It’s also a more practical, handy, and cost-effective alternative. We propose leadership, business planning, stakeholder involvement, interpersonal skills, crisis management, project planning, and financial accounting as just some of the many useful courses you should consider.

How Do You Report Your PDUs?

The procedure for submitting the needed PMI PDUs is straightforward. The PMI’s continuous certification requirement, or CCR, cycle begins the very day you clear your test and can last for three years. To submit your PMI PDUs, you’ll need to do the following.

Make Your Report Over The Internet

  • Earn PDUs by participating in the activities listed above.
  • Log in using your pmi.org login information.
  • To register your PDUs, click the headings underneath the Education and Giving Back categories, then fill out the form.
  • After you’re done submitting the required PDUs and everything is ready for you to renew your PMI certification, now it’s time to pay the fee. Finish up the certification renewal procedure by entering your payment card information on the following page. Once you click on ‘Place Order’ you are all done!

That’s all, your certification has successfully been renewed. A fresh CCR cycle shall begin after this, so you’ll need to repeat the same processes to maintain your certification every 3 years.

Send Over Your Report Via Mail

Your report of the necessary PMI PDUs can also be sent through regular postal mail. If you want to complete it this way, you need to fill out the form you can find on the PMI website and mail it to them. You can find the mailing address and all of the details you need on the form.

What Are The PMI Certification Renewal Fees?

If you’re looking to renew your PMI certification but want to know all of the details about the costs and fees before you get started with the process, take a look at the renewal fees for each of the PMI certifications below.

PMI Certification: PMI-ACP (PMI Agile Certified Practitioner)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PMP (Project Management Professional)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PMI-RMP (PMI Risk Management Professional)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PgMP (Program Management Professional)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PfMP (Portfolio Management Professional)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PMI-PBA (PMI Professional in Business Analysis)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: PMI-SP (PMI Scheduling Professional)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

PMI Certification: CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)

  • Member Fee: $60 USD
  • Non-member Fee: $150 USD

The yearly renewal charge for your Project Management Institute membership is 129 USD, and the cost of membership is 139 USD. If you are presently pursuing a degree, you can pay just 32 USD per year for student membership. The retiree or senior fee is 65 USD per year if you have left your job. As a result, if you are an official PMI member, you will pay a substantially lower certification renewal charge than non-members.

If you have several PMI certificates, paying for the renewal cost of all of them while being a PMI member might save you a significant sum, so that would be an even bigger benefit you can get from it.

Maintaining Your PMI Certification

To maintain your PMI certification, you must earn a specified number of PDUs within a specific timeframe. The requirements vary depending on the certification level. Here are some easy things you can do to maintain your PMI certification:

1. Plan Ahead:

Create a professional development plan that aligns with your certification requirements. Identify the types of activities you will pursue to earn PDUs and set goals for each category.

2. Engage in Continuous Learning:

Stay updated with the latest project management practices, methodologies, and tools. Attend webinars, workshops, or conferences to expand your knowledge and earn PDUs.

3. Read Project Management Literature:

Invest time in reading project management books, articles, and blogs. Choose topics that are relevant to your certification and professional interests.

4. Join Professional Associations:

Join project management associations or communities to access resources, networking opportunities, and educational events that offer PDUs.

5. Contribute to the Project Management Community:

Share your knowledge and expertise by presenting at conferences, writing articles, or mentoring others. These activities not only contribute to the profession but also earn you PDUs.

I found the content of the PMP Preparation course to be very detailed and thorough. I also greatly appreciated its attachment to a theme. I would have finished the course had I not decided to switch careers. The only improvements I can suggest are to update the website and course user interface, as it looks very old. There are also some typos within the course. Thank you!

BrainSensei has been the best approach to PMP exam training I could ask for. The experience is immersive, customizable, adaptive and really makes learning fun! Reading the story of how the founders came up with an approach to studying for this beast of an exam that wasn't so focused in the minutiae of PMI jargon, I totally get the idea behind the approach. Wish I would've discovered this earlier on in my journey.

I think the course is good. I wouldn't mind a few more videos and audible in the trainings. I do a lot do reading. The Course documents should remain open for longer than 6 months, given that PMI gives you 365 days to prepare for exam. Also, the option to extend visibility for the course documents, costs almost a 5th of the course, but opens up the docs for just 30 more days. Propose to extend this to 90 days at the very least.

- Vasily

I'm very satisfied with the Brain Sensei PMP Exam Preparation Course. All 8 Modules are very well structured and detailed. I believe that practice exams included in the course helped me a lot with the preparation for my PMP Exam. I appreciate Brain Sensei for their amazing course and for the awesome service. They responded to all my requests immediately. Thanks. Highly recommended.

- Helen Borimsky

The format of the prep-course is great overall and a great alternative to reading the PMBOK. Barring a few minor glitches here and there, the flow of information ensures that concepts are well understood not only from the point of examination but to the point of application in day to day professional activities. Explanations provided in the answers of prep exams (apart from the 1st one) are also a key to understanding the thought process to be applied. With the focus being on Agile approaches from 2021, the information in the course seemed adequate to cover the concepts. All the Best to all aspirants.

Your course, quizzes at the end of most modules and practice exams truly challenged me. I definitely derived the value and knowledge I was looking for in preparation for taking the PMP Certification Test. In particular, I appreciated the explanations that popped-up in the tests after an answer was submitted - very educational and helpful to my learning/understanding the material and concepts better. Some areas that could be improved (and some of this is nit-picking) include: * Some of the grammar and overall sentence structures, particularly in the latest set of practice exams, needs to be cleaned-up. Some were missing 'of', 'for, or had an extra 'an' in the narrative - got confusing at times. * In the practice exams, I'd like to see shorter sentences rather than the flurry of 'and' and 'or' conjunctions that made reading the sentences go on forever (had to read them multiple times to truly understand their meaning). That said, I enjoyed the overall online course taking experience and thank you for accommodating my requested time extensions. Best regards, Scott Conn

What I like best about Brain Sensei is the interactive nature of the course. I think this material would be numbing if delivered as simple lectures with slides. This method is an improvement on that. On the other hand, an in-person course, while more expensive, would likely be even more useful if you have the funds and the time. I haven't taken the PMP exam yet, so I can't comment on how useful the practice tests are.

The Brain Sensei PMP program is a wonderful program that condenses the PMBOK into digestible and retainable bites leveraging the power of story telling. If you're looking for a program that will get you your credit hours but also help establish a foundation of PMI knowledge this is the program for you!

Truly the best course in town if you wish to pass the PMP exam on the first try. I love the idea of playing the role of the samurai and practice your project management skill in her shoes. And not to forget, the generous amount of practice exam gave me just the right dose of confidence before taking the real one. Highly recommended

The course was great, though I found a lot of parts hard to comprehend. I feel a lot more prepared and better skilled to manage projects in my career. Thanks, Brain Sensei.

The BrainSensei PMP preparation course provided me with all the material required to be ready for the exam. It is well structured, explains the concepts clearly, and most importantly, provides ample training questions through the four mock exams and assessment questions at the end of each module. I passed the exam with Above Target in all sections on the first attempt.

Overall I really liked this learning course. It was very helpful and allowed me to be well prepared for the exam. The 2nd and 3rd practice exam are great to give you real example questions and help prepare you for what to expect. BrainSensei's customer service was the best. I had to delay taking my test due to COVID and they extended my membership for free. They went above and beyond my expectation which was great. Only changes I would recommend is to add 1 or 2 more practice exams like the 2nd and 3rd exam and get rid of the agile practice exam. This is not a real focus of the test and therefore is not really applicable in my opinion.

BrainSensei developed a great learning method to prepare for the PMP certification exam. Their customer service is always very professional, fast, spot on and dedicated to your success. I recommend them.

I've sent several emails to BrainSensei (one of them not so nice, but the rest were okay) and the team has always been so polite in answering the questions. I'm a very straight-forward person and don't like the PMI-ism type questions because they seem like 'gotchas' or traps, and this is not how I manage my team. I took the Master of Project course (which was garbage) then failed the PMP exam. Throughout the PMP exam I felt so out of touch. Even with the first practice exam on BrainSensei I felt out of place, but I am not getting the hang of things. I hope to pass the exam on the second attempt! The brain sensei experience has been *miles* ahead of the Master of Project garbage. Brain Sensei should be proud of both their product and of their team! I love getting replies to my concerns so quickly. Nice work :) !!!

I was very pleased with the preparation provided for the PMP certification. I went through the materials twice and passed the exam on the first try. A couple of the questions need to be polished up, but very good training overall.

I have studied with other programs and I didn’t feel prepared. After a short time with Brain Sensei, I had the confidence to succeed on exam day, which I did on the first try after studying with Brain Sensei. It was worth every penny.

Overall layout is good, but there are some quality issues. Progress isn't always saved across all devices and progress gets lost. Some small spelling mistakes. I loved the practical storyline...

Need improvement in presenting more relevant real exam type questions. The practice exams are too simple and easy and do not prepare you for the real exam. Otherwise, good concept presenting material

The prep materials provided plenty of content which prepared me well for the PMP exam. The questions were packed with information.

Teaches the PMP in a solid manner, some things you need to know as a potential consumer: -The Samurai backstory is extremely short, and didn’t really assist me with recall in any in-depth way. It only gave broad brush-strokes as to what each phase entailed. -MOST of what was on the test was covered in the lessons, however if I had zero real prior PM knowledge prior to the test, I would have failed. -The first practice test forces you, as the student to actually read into the PMBOK, which was a benefit in the long run as it assisted me with quickly referencing what I needed to find. -The course will likely cover wave tops and subjects, forcing me to self-study for a week before my test... not a bad deal all things considered. -Brain Sensei’s course has incorporated Agile into one of their practice tests, and this test IS mandatory. This may seem strange, and I didn’t get a satisfactory reason why I needed to take a purely Agile test when I only wanted to take the PMP, for anyone else in this scenario, this is the reason: In June, PMI is revamping the PMP test to include Agile as a significant portion of the PMP. Brain Sensei is just ahead of the curve trying to get students prepared... fret not. Their customer service is extremely responsive and does take care of their members. My program had a couple bugs, and the customer service fixed my problems within 24 hours. All in all... it was absolutely worth the money for me.

I am very impressed with this learning system. The content is laid out in a way that will make any learner understand all the process groups and ITTOs in order to understand Project management and be equipped to excel in the test. The learning system is engaging and fun at the same time. It's very different than other learning material which is composed mostly of videos. Some improvements are needed, but in my opinion Brain Sensei is great value for money

At first, I was attracted to Brain Sensei training for their original learning program using a Samurai's story. And indeed it made the whole learning experience funnier - so easier. I felt like the Samurai. Then, I was amazed by The Brain Sensei Team's reactivity and help when I reached out through contact@brainsensei.com Their support was constantly reliable and efficient. I appreciated their professionalism and didn't feel on my own. At last, the course and the practice exams proved to be efficient since I passed the PMP exam - with 'Above Targe't in all Domains. So thank you so much Brain Sensei Team !! Charlene

SO far I am thoroughly enjoying the Brain Sensei PMP prep course. I have taken a Project management class as a part of my degree which I recently completed and project management has always interested me. I find the course to be educational and easy to follow. I am grateful that this course has been designed in such a way that is simple to understand all of the complexities in project management and that allows me to study at my own pace.

This review is based on completing all course work through module 102. The story and interactive nature of the course are helpful for learning and relating the material. It would be nice to have the page numbers to the PMBOK guide where references are made to it. Other information that will be helpful, are the explanations to the practice questions at the end of each module. These are provided only after immediately answering the questions. Having these available in the score summary from the 'history' tab will be helpful to refresh why the answer is correct and other options are not.

Overall I would rate this course an 8/10. I liked how there were exams towards the end of every module and I felt that it was very useful having it laid out in different scenarios. I rate it only an 8/10 as I had some glitch/software issues and lost my progress resulting in me having to re-do modules/exams multiple times. All in all, that was maybe useful in the end as it was a way for me study or 're-learn' the course material. Thank you!

A smart approach to present the information which makes it fun and engaging while at the same time preparing for the PMP exam. Brain Sensei differentiates itself from other PMP exam preps in that it delivers the knowledge through the use of storytelling technique. I recommend this course because it will help you pass your PMP exam on the first try.

Excellent course for preparing for the PMP exam in a fun and engaging way! The practice questions resemble the actual questions on the exam making it a completely worthwhile experience.

I passed the PMP exam after taking Brain Sensei's Online PMP Certification Exam Prep. The practice exam questions were so similar to the questions that appeared on the exam. On exam day, when I sat down to take the test and started running through the questions I felt so relieved! The practice exams are also timed so you get more comfortable with the exam experience and feel better prepared when you sit down to take the test. The other differentiator was the video content throughout the modules. The concepts are taught through a story of a young samurai defending her kingdom. This will probably be the only PMP prep course where you can learn all the knowledge areas and feudal Japan at the same time. I'd recommend this course not just because of the videos but because it helped me pass my exam on the first try.
