Examining Project Management Education Online

By September 13, 2022No Comments

Examining Project Management Education Online

Covering the Project Management Institutes’ (PMI) 35 contact hours of project management education in preparation is often one of the most intimidating tasks to prepare for your Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. Searching for information about the exam and its requirements brings up so many choices it can become overwhelming. If your goal is to find the most suitable option for obtaining your PMP exam prep training and want to take your career to the next level, this is a great place to start.

Before starting your research, first, take a moment to get to know what requirements you are going to have to fulfill in order to take the PMP exam. You must have at minimum a secondary education. With a secondary education, you must have 60 months of project management experience. If you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, the requirement drops to 36 months.

Those who have attended a GAC (Global Accreditation Center) approved college or university require 24 months of professional project management experience. The constant is always the 35 contact hours of Project Management Training.

Around the world, the PMI’s PMP certification is the most acknowledged and accepted. The PMI’s standards of best practices and professional ethics make their certificate the one to have. In the United States, a project manager that holds a PMP certificate in good standing earns a minimum of 22% more than a project manager who holds no certificate. Some studies have shown that percentage to go up to as high as 32%. The significance of completing the requirements and passing the exam promotes the PMP-holder, as well as the profession of Project Management.

PMP Certification Prerequisites

As stated above, there are certain requirements needed before going through training and applying for the PMP exam. The two E’s, education and experience, are prerequisites that professionals must meet. Just by trying to check those two boxes, many people realize they aren’t ready to move forward and take the exam. Depending on the individual and how close they are to meeting the prerequisites, they may want to start out with the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) certificate instead.

Prerequisites for the PMP certificate are:

  • Secondary education, either a high school diploma or global equivalent, or an associate degree, and a minimum of 5 years of project experience (60 months)
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher with a minimum of 3 years project experience (36 months)
  • A bachelor’s degree or above from a GAC accredited school and 2 years of project experience (24 months)

Once you have determined where you stand on the prerequisites, you must attend 35 contact hours of project management education.

Project Management Education Online

More companies are offering Project Management Education online. The more the demand for certified professionals grows, the faster the industry grows. Online courses are particularly appealing. They often allow you to study at your own pace, so that you are able to work around the projects you have. Being able to log on to a class as opposed to wasting the gas and time it takes to attend in person is preferable to those whose schedule is already stretched to the limit.

The choices are overwhelming, so figuring out which course is the best, which company, what resources, etc. can be a dilemma. So, how can you earn those 35 contact hours and why would you choose to take an online course for Project Management Education?

Options for PMP Education Hours: How to Obtain 35 Contact Hours

There are several options for obtaining your 35 contact hours of Project Management Education. How you want to work on them, where you want to work on them, and when you want to work on them all influence the type of training course you will be looking for.

The conditions vary for each choice:

  • Amount of time
  • Location
  • Cost
  • Flexibility

The following section of this blog will talk about the main types of programs you can take. Each of these course styles will provide you with the 35 hours of Project Management Training certificate of completion.

Each style has advantages and disadvantages. This assessment of the styles should help you in determining which one suits your needs best.

Project Management Boot Camps (In-person or Virtual)

No, there isn’t a drill sergeant in these and you don’t need to have your head shaved or wear a uniform. But the name does represent this intensive classroom training. Project Management Bootcamps are usually held on consecutive days, between 3 – 5 days. They usually go for a minimum of 4 hours per session and up to 9 hours. They are comprehensive, in-depth, and can be exhausting.

The online classes have a live instructor as well as other peers in attendance. Some companies offer in-person training within a facility. In order to receive the 35-hour completion, you must be in attendance for all of the days whether it is in-person or online. A missed day will require you to retake the entire course and most companies do not provide a money-back guarantee if you were unable to attend.

This type of program is one of the costliest and can be priced anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. While the method is appealing to those that want to get the work done as quickly as possible, there are some things to consider.

  1. You must be able to dedicate the entire length of the Bootcamp to attending. If you are working on projects that need your attention, you will not be available.
  2. If the course is in-person, you must be in attendance at the chosen location.
  3. You must attend on time and for the entirety of the class.
  4. As noted above, the cost for this type of course is much higher than other forms of Project Management Training (virtual bootcamps tend to be less expensive).

This method’s main strength is also its weakness. By concentrating the coursework into the time frames above, it forces focus which can lead to the inability to retain the information needed.  We recommend Brain Sensei’s live virtual instructor classes, as they’re some of the most affordable, with excellent instructors and a 100% pass guarantee on the PMP exam.

Classroom PMP Training (In-person or Virtual)

Whether you are attending an in-person classroom training or a virtual classroom training, this method can be less intensive. The course is usually spread out over 3 to 8 weeks, and in some cases, it may be presented in parts and spread out over months. It is often scheduled in the evening or on weekends and provides you with more time between each session. By giving you more time between the sessions, it allows you to put into practice the knowledge that you acquired. This also gives you the ability to continue working on projects, scheduling your time around the coursework.

It still meets the required 35 contact hours, but just like with the boot camp, there are things you need to consider.

  1. You must be able to dedicate the entire time to attending. If you are working on projects that need your attention, you will not be available.
  2. If the course is in-person, you must be in attendance at the chosen location.
  3. You must be on time and stay for the entirety of the class.

Classroom Training is similar in cost to the bootcamp training. It can be priced anywhere from $1,000 to $3000 for a course (virtual courses tend to be less). Because of the more relaxed timeline, students might have a tough time with recall. This course of study requires more commitment to specific class times.  We recommend Brain Sensei’s live virtual instructor classes, as they’re some of the most affordable, with excellent instructors and a 100% pass guarantee on the PMP exam.

Tutoring

One-on-one instruction with a tutor allows the individual to have a personalized course directed at them that meets their needs and follows their terms. While the tutor often sets the time and place, there are now many more tutors online and there is more flexibility. Individualized learning gives the students time to ask questions and focus on the areas where they need the most assistance. It provides evenly dispensed information and the ability to learn at their own pace.

However, the minimum amount of time you can hire a tutor is 35 hours. In some cases, it might need to be much longer. Some tutors can charge over $100 an hour and if additional hours are required, that can add up to quite a high amount. For this reason, tutoring is the most expensive option.

If at some point you can’t continue anymore, you will need to supplement that knowledge somewhere. That leads us to Self-Paced Learning.

Self-Paced Online PMP Training

This online, virtual learning approach allows you to be in charge of the course. It is the number one route of convenience for most people. You can complete the hours at any time and any place, and at the pace that you need to. Most companies offer customer support for questions or problems you may encounter along the way, and depending on which training provider you choose, the material may be available for up to a year after you sign up for the course (we recommend Brain Sensei’s self-paced courses).

This course type is often the choice for individuals that currently work in the field and need to be flexible with their training. Self-paced learning is also the least expensive option, starting at around $450 USD to receive the 35 contact hours needed.

However, there is no one-on-one with a live instructor, so depending on your study style, you may want to include some of your own note-taking to ensure that you are getting all of the information required.  Most self-paced courses include practice exams or exam simulators that will test your knowledge so that you know you’re ready to take the actual exam (and pass it!).

Opting in for Online courses

Project managers, team leaders, and those working on projects find it hard to take time off for continuing education. But the fact of the matter is that in order to succeed and progress in your profession, that commitment needs to be met. Online courses allow you to work on your professional development. With the variety of course options and companies that now provide online learning, it allows you to schedule your time accordingly. It keeps you on track with the current trends and methods used by your peers and is more cost-effective than using your valuable time to drive to a location and sit inside of a classroom.

Online courses also give you the opportunity to go back over course work so that you can brush up on any areas you may be lacking in.

How to Select an Online Project Management Education Program

Now that you know the different types of training it’s time to look into the actual courses. There are some great (and inexpensive) online courses that will satisfy the 35 hours of project management education requirement and prepare you for the PMP certification exam. Some of them even include a pass guarantee, meaning if you don’t pass the exam after taking their course, they’ll provide additional support and give the money back on your course purchase.

When choosing a company, you need to consider the following points.

The quality of the instructors (if taking a live class)

Getting to know your instructors in an online scenario isn’t as easy as hanging out in the hallway and waiting for them to show up for office hours in college. All companies boast that they are the best but being able to find out what makes them the best provides you with assurances needed before spending your money, and more importantly, your time. By supplying the backgrounds of the instructors, the company allows you to do further research. A mini bio, a CV, or even a LinkedIn profile can help you to verify the person that will be instructing you. The choice of instructors also lends to the choice of material and content for the training. The better the instructor the more concise the material will be.

A person that doesn’t have a PMP or has never worked as a project manager is probably not someone you want to take the lead from. In any situation, classroom or online, you want to be able to verify the person that you are learning from knows what they are teaching.

Research. Research. Research.

Check the success rate of the company. How many students have they had? Are there any reviews or testimonials? Are they recognized by the PMI? The internet is a vast wealth of knowledge. Use it before spending your money and your time on the wrong choice.

We all understand that not everyone is going to be happy with every situation, so weigh the negative reviews against the positives. Quality is key. And don’t hesitate to ask your peers. Those that have gone through the training can provide you with a wealth of knowledge and feedback.

PMI recognition

Check the PMI’s website to see if the training you are thinking about meets their criteria for PMP certification. The site will tell you if the company meets the criteria and how complete the content is.

Course variety

Some students may only need certain areas covered. If you need project management courses that cover the knowledge but not the test itself, you may be able to find a company that provides a custom course catalog that is service oriented.

Method variety

Some companies may only offer in-person classroom learning or only offer boot camps. A company that provides a variety of the options we discussed earlier in the blog gives you a better chance of getting everything you need in one place.

Self-Paced learning

As we covered before, self-paced learning lets you go with your own flow. It allows you to continue working on the projects, both personal and professional, that you need to succeed while giving you the opportunity, when and where time allows, to take full advantage of your learning potential.

Pricing

If you are required to get in contact with the organization before you can get an answer on the price, it may be best to move on. Most good Project Management Education courses are upfront about what they offer and how much it costs.

Conclusion

The benefits of online project management education are clear. We’ve provided you with the means and the know-how to go forward and get your PMP contact hours in order to schedule your exam.

Of the online courses available, we strongly recommend Brain Sensei’s PMP Exam Prep courses. They offer Live Virtual Online training (both bootcamp and more flexible schedules) as well as unique story-based self-paced PMP exam prep courses. They include a pass guarantee, money-back guarantee, access to the entire course with unlimited practice questions for an entire year, and fantastic customer support.  They also offer a standalone PMP Exam Simulator if you already have your education hours and just want to test your knowledge.

This is a great tool to support the PMBOK Guide. Quizzes, presentations, and videos help break down the massive amount of information that comes with the PMBOK, truly helping you prepare for the actual exam. Great way to get your 35 hours classroom credit!

I think the course is good. I wouldn't mind a few more videos and audible in the trainings. I do a lot do reading. I bought the PMBOK book on the side and sometimes have trouble connect the class to the PMBOK book. I do enjoy your format. I am learning. Personally I need buckle down and spend more time on it.

I passed my test on the first try! Excellent learning tool. There were some questions that I found to be confusing or contradictory with the answers, so I sent those to the Brain Sensei team. They always responded quickly, even on the weekend! Some adjustments are being made because of my feedback. I appreciate their care and that they take the time to support during the studying period.

I'm very satisfied with the Brain Sensei PMP Exam Preparation Course. All 8 Modules are very well structured and detailed. This course is best for those who would like to learn at their own pace. Of course, lots of studying is needed (PMBOOK and other agile-related books and material). The customer service team is exceptional, very supportive. I had an immediate response to whatever I needed.

Excellent test prep for the exam, though some more practice tests on agile would be beneficial

It is often hard to figure out what the right answer was on a quiz or practice exam. Frequently, the correct answer is buried in a lot of text about what options are wrong.

- James

The content was spot on and I am much more confident in understanding the processes and how everything works together now. (The) course is great; however, the customer service team is Exceptional! Very responsive and thorough, and at all times; and when I had some technical difficulties (or questions) they stuck with me through resolution. Highly recommended program and company.

The Course documents should remain open for longer than 6 months, given that PMI gives you 365 days to prepare for exam. Also, the option to extend visibility for the course documents, costs almost a 5th of the course, but opens up the docs for just 30 more days. Propose to extend this to 90 days at the very least.

I'm very satisfied with the Brain Sensei PMP Exam Preparation Course. All 8 Modules are very well structured and detailed. I believe that practice exams included in the course helped me a lot with the preparation for my PMP Exam. I appreciate Brain Sensei for their amazing course and for the awesome service. They responded to all my requests immediately. Thanks. Highly recommended.

- Helen Borimsky

The format of the prep-course is great overall and a great alternative to reading the PMBOK. Barring a few minor glitches here and there, the flow of information ensures that concepts are well understood not only from the point of examination but to the point of application in day to day professional activities. Explanations provided in the answers of prep exams (apart from the 1st one) are also a key to understanding the thought process to be applied. With the focus being on Agile approaches from 2021, the information in the course seemed adequate to cover the concepts. All the Best to all aspirants.

Studied BrainSensei for 11 days and passed. Succinct and highly informational chapters. The 4 practice exams are marginally more difficult then the PMP. Borderline impossible to fail the PMP if you pass this course.

Great course! They break down all concepts in a very clear and interactive way, that doesn't put you to sleep. Would recommend to anyone who is looking to pass the PMP exam with flying colors.

Your course, quizzes at the end of most modules and practice exams truly challenged me. I definitely derived the value and knowledge I was looking for in preparation for taking the PMP Certification Test. In particular, I appreciated the explanations that popped-up in the tests after an answer was submitted - very educational and helpful to my learning/understanding the material and concepts better. Some areas that could be improved (and some of this is nit-picking) include: * Some of the grammar and overall sentence structures, particularly in the latest set of practice exams, needs to be cleaned-up. Some were missing 'of', 'for, or had an extra 'an' in the narrative - got confusing at times. * In the practice exams, I'd like to see shorter sentences rather than the flurry of 'and' and 'or' conjunctions that made reading the sentences go on forever (had to read them multiple times to truly understand their meaning). That said, I enjoyed the overall online course taking experience and thank you for accommodating my requested time extensions. Best regards, Scott Conn

- Scott Conn

Liked it. Need access for longer though.

- Jerome

What I like best about Brain Sensei is the interactive nature of the course. I think this material would be numbing if delivered as simple lectures with slides. This method is an improvement on that. On the other hand, an in-person course, while more expensive, would likely be even more useful if you have the funds and the time. I haven't taken the PMP exam yet, so I can't comment on how useful the practice tests are.

- James

The Brain Sensei PMP program is a wonderful program that condenses the PMBOK into digestible and retainable bites leveraging the power of story telling. If you're looking for a program that will get you your credit hours but also help establish a foundation of PMI knowledge this is the program for you!

Truly the best course in town if you wish to pass the PMP exam on the first try. I love the idea of playing the role of the samurai and practice your project management skill in her shoes. And not to forget, the generous amount of practice exam gave me just the right dose of confidence before taking the real one. Highly recommended

- Minh Vo

---

The course was great, though I found a lot of parts hard to comprehend. I feel a lot more prepared and better skilled to manage projects in my career. Thanks, Brain Sensei.

- Jill Finkelstein

---

The BrainSensei PMP preparation course provided me with all the material required to be ready for the exam. It is well structured, explains the concepts clearly, and most importantly, provides ample training questions through the four mock exams and assessment questions at the end of each module. I passed the exam with Above Target in all sections on the first attempt.

- Gael Riethmuller

---

Overall I really liked this learning course. It was very helpful and allowed me to be well prepared for the exam. The 2nd and 3rd practice exam are great to give you real example questions and help prepare you for what to expect. BrainSensei's customer service was the best. I had to delay taking my test due to COVID and they extended my membership for free. They went above and beyond my expectation which was great. Only changes I would recommend is to add 1 or 2 more practice exams like the 2nd and 3rd exam and get rid of the agile practice exam. This is not a real focus of the test and therefore is not really applicable in my opinion.

- Ronnie

---

BrainSensei developed a great learning method to prepare for the PMP certification exam. Their customer service is always very professional, fast, spot on and dedicated to your success. I recommend them.

- G. Buchs

---

I've sent several emails to BrainSensei (one of them not so nice, but the rest were okay) and the team has always been so polite in answering the questions. I'm a very straight-forward person and don't like the PMI-ism type questions because they seem like 'gotchas' or traps, and this is not how I manage my team. I took the Master of Project course (which was garbage) then failed the PMP exam. Throughout the PMP exam I felt so out of touch. Even with the first practice exam on BrainSensei I felt out of place, but I am not getting the hang of things. I hope to pass the exam on the second attempt! The brain sensei experience has been *miles* ahead of the Master of Project garbage. Brain Sensei should be proud of both their product and of their team! I love getting replies to my concerns so quickly. Nice work :) !!!

Need improvement in presenting more relevant real exam type questions. The practice exams are too simple and easy and do not prepare you for the real exam. Otherwise, good concept presenting material

- Amir

The prep materials provided plenty of content which prepared me well for the PMP exam. The questions were packed with information.

Teaches the PMP in a solid manner, some things you need to know as a potential consumer: -The Samurai backstory is extremely short, and didn’t really assist me with recall in any in-depth way. It only gave broad brush-strokes as to what each phase entailed. -MOST of what was on the test was covered in the lessons, however if I had zero real prior PM knowledge prior to the test, I would have failed. -The first practice test forces you, as the student to actually read into the PMBOK, which was a benefit in the long run as it assisted me with quickly referencing what I needed to find. -The course will likely cover wave tops and subjects, forcing me to self-study for a week before my test... not a bad deal all things considered. -Brain Sensei’s course has incorporated Agile into one of their practice tests, and this test IS mandatory. This may seem strange, and I didn’t get a satisfactory reason why I needed to take a purely Agile test when I only wanted to take the PMP, for anyone else in this scenario, this is the reason: In June, PMI is revamping the PMP test to include Agile as a significant portion of the PMP. Brain Sensei is just ahead of the curve trying to get students prepared... fret not. Their customer service is extremely responsive and does take care of their members. My program had a couple bugs, and the customer service fixed my problems within 24 hours. All in all... it was absolutely worth the money for me.

I am very impressed with this learning system. The content is laid out in a way that will make any learner understand all the process groups and ITTOs in order to understand Project management and be equipped to excel in the test. The learning system is engaging and fun at the same time. It's very different than other learning material which is composed mostly of videos. Some improvements are needed, but in my opinion Brain Sensei is great value for money

At first, I was attracted to Brain Sensei training for their original learning program using a Samurai's story. And indeed it made the whole learning experience funnier - so easier. I felt like the Samurai. Then, I was amazed by The Brain Sensei Team's reactivity and help when I reached out through contact@brainsensei.com Their support was constantly reliable and efficient. I appreciated their professionalism and didn't feel on my own. At last, the course and the practice exams proved to be efficient since I passed the PMP exam - with 'Above Targe't in all Domains. So thank you so much Brain Sensei Team !! Charlene

Overall very good. Got stuck a few times trying to find resources which I should have downloaded the before starting the program. Customer service has been great.

SO far I am thoroughly enjoying the Brain Sensei PMP prep course. I have taken a Project management class as a part of my degree which I recently completed and project management has always interested me. I find the course to be educational and easy to follow. I am grateful that this course has been designed in such a way that is simple to understand all of the complexities in project management and that allows me to study at my own pace.

This review is based on completing all course work through module 102. The story and interactive nature of the course are helpful for learning and relating the material. It would be nice to have the page numbers to the PMBOK guide where references are made to it. Other information that will be helpful, are the explanations to the practice questions at the end of each module. These are provided only after immediately answering the questions. Having these available in the score summary from the 'history' tab will be helpful to refresh why the answer is correct and other options are not.

- Rohan Punit

---

Overall I would rate this course an 8/10. I liked how there were exams towards the end of every module and I felt that it was very useful having it laid out in different scenarios. I rate it only an 8/10 as I had some glitch/software issues and lost my progress resulting in me having to re-do modules/exams multiple times. All in all, that was maybe useful in the end as it was a way for me study or 're-learn' the course material. Thank you!

A smart approach to present the information which makes it fun and engaging while at the same time preparing for the PMP exam. Brain Sensei differentiates itself from other PMP exam preps in that it delivers the knowledge through the use of storytelling technique. I recommend this course because it will help you pass your PMP exam on the first try.

Excellent course for preparing for the PMP exam in a fun and engaging way! The practice questions resemble the actual questions on the exam making it a completely worthwhile experience.

I passed the PMP exam after taking Brain Sensei's Online PMP Certification Exam Prep. The practice exam questions were so similar to the questions that appeared on the exam. On exam day, when I sat down to take the test and started running through the questions I felt so relieved! The practice exams are also timed so you get more comfortable with the exam experience and feel better prepared when you sit down to take the test. The other differentiator was the video content throughout the modules. The concepts are taught through a story of a young samurai defending her kingdom. This will probably be the only PMP prep course where you can learn all the knowledge areas and feudal Japan at the same time. I'd recommend this course not just because of the videos but because it helped me pass my exam on the first try.

Good course, but a few grammatical errors with how some questions were worded.

Loved the unique approach and it still had all the info I'd expect from a full PMP exam prep course. Very responsive on questions too.
